ScrapeGraphAI can load a webpage, hand its contents to an AI model and return the facts you asked for in an organised file. Connect the open-source library to Ollama and that AI work can happen locally instead of consuming cloud credits.
ScrapeGraphAI has two versions that are easy to confuse
The hosted ScrapeGraphAI service gives new users a limited credit allowance and then charges for continued use. It manages browsers, difficult websites, scaling and the AI model for you. That convenience is the product being sold.
The MIT-licensed ScrapeGraphAI Python library is different. You run it on your computer, provide the browser and choose the AI model. Ollama supplies that model locally, so there is no ScrapeGraphAI credit meter and no OpenAI, Gemini or other paid API key.
What this can do for a normal person
Traditional web scraping often means identifying page elements and writing rules for each website. ScrapeGraphAI lets you ask for the outcome in ordinary language: “Give me the visible product names and prices” or “List the event title, date and location.”
- Organise public event listings into structured data
- Collect visible product details for a small comparison
- Extract names, dates and links from a public directory
- Turn a long permitted page into selected facts
- Bypassing a login, paywall or CAPTCHA
- Collecting private or sensitive personal information
- Hammering a website with thousands of requests
- Publishing results without checking the source
The result is normally JSON: an organised text file that software and spreadsheets can use. It is not automatically a polished Excel workbook. A reader who only needs five facts once will probably finish faster by copying them manually.
Free does not mean effortless
Ollama's default Llama 3.2 model is roughly a 2 GB download. ScrapeGraphAI currently requires Python 3.12 or newer, and Playwright downloads a browser so it can open modern pages. A dedicated graphics card can make local AI faster, but it is not mandatory for the small model in this guide.
- Subscription
- None
- API charges
- None with Ollama
- Actual cost
- Hardware, electricity and time
Small local models are the reason this can run on ordinary computers, but they are also the biggest compromise. A larger cloud model may follow complicated instructions and messy page structures more reliably. Local is a privacy and cost choice, not an automatic accuracy upgrade.
AI output still needs a human
A clean JSON response can still be wrong. The model may miss an item, combine two rows, misunderstand a price or fill a requested field with an unsupported guess. Run important extractions more than once and compare every result with the visible page.
Using Ollama means the page text does not need to be submitted to a paid cloud AI provider. It does not make browsing invisible: the website still receives requests from your computer. ScrapeGraphAI also documents anonymous package telemetry and provides an environment setting to disable it; our setup guide switches it off before importing the library.
Respect the website's terms, robots instructions, copyright, rate limits and applicable privacy law. Do not use this guide to evade technical restrictions or collect information you are not authorized to process.

The NoSub verdict
ScrapeGraphAI with Ollama is a real no-subscription option, but it belongs in the intermediate section of the directory. It makes a technical job more understandable; it does not remove the technical setup entirely.
It is worth learning when the same permitted research job repeats, cloud AI fees matter or page contents should stay away from an external model provider. For occasional copying, a browser and a spreadsheet remain simpler.
